Grandma’s Stuffed Celery

This no-fuss appetizer never goes out of style. Crisp, cool celery stalks are filled with a creamy, tangy, slightly nutty cheese spread. Perfect for parties, potlucks, or a nostalgic snack.

Prep time: 15 minutes
Chill time: 30 minutes
Total time: 45 minutes
Servings: 6–8 as an appetizer

Ingredients

For the celery:

  • 1 whole bunch celery, fresh and crisp

For the filling:

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened

  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • ¼ cup finely chopped walnuts

  • ¼ tsp garlic powder

  • ¼ tsp onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For garnish (optional):

  • Paprika or fresh chopped chives

Instructions

1. Prepare the celery
Wash the celery stalks thoroughly. Pat them completely dry with a paper towel. Trim off the leafy ends and the tough white base. Cut the stalks into 3- to 4-inch long pieces.

2. Make the filling
In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chopped walnuts, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix vigorously with a spoon or a hand mixer until smooth and well blended.

3. Fill the celery
Using a small spoon, a butter knife, or a piping bag, fill the groove of each celery piece with the cream cheese mixture. Spread it evenly.

4. Garnish and chill
Arrange the stuffed celery on a plate or platter. If desired, lightly sprinkle with paprika or chopped chives. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the filling to firm up.

5. Serve
Arrange on a serving platter and enjoy cold.

Success Tips & Variations

  • Best crunch – Choose celery that is firm and tightly packed, with no limp or rubbery stalks.

  • Easy spreading – Ensure cream cheese is fully softened at room temperature to avoid a lumpy filling.

  • Make ahead – Prepare the filling up to 2 days in advance and store it covered in the refrigerator. Assemble the celery sticks a few hours before serving.

  • Nut-free option – Omit walnuts or substitute with sunflower seeds or finely chopped pecans.

  • Add a kick – Stir in a dash of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper.

  • Herby twist – Mix in 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped dill or parsley.

  • Blue cheese version – Replace cheddar with crumbled blue cheese and add 1 tablespoon of sour cream for a tangier filling.

Enjoy this timeless, crowd-pleasing appetizer!
